Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last! – from “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King, Jr. Aug. 28, 1963

So for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day my wife and I took our bi-racial daughter to the park and played, something that we take the freedom to do anytime we can.

Some other thoughts we had . . .

  • Listening to the “I Have a Dream” speech (my daughter is not quite old enough for this)
  • Going somewhere on public transportation and riding in the front seat (where I generally ride all the time in honor of Rosa Parks)
  • Watching the Boondocks episode Return of the King (irreverent I know, but a message that my people still need to hear)
